As we have seen in the previous articles: August, 2006 to January 2007; Matt (I) took a series of lessons from Tim McElhinny (golf pro and proprietor at
Painted Hills Golf Course).
Basic Sand Trap Lesson

Sand shots can be intimidating! Tim introduced me to a simple set up and thought process to make this shot easy!

First, use an open stance with the ball up near the left foot which helps get the ball up fast.

Second, exaggerate the face of the club (practically flat) much like a flop shot.

Now imagine a square around the ball and just try to hit the sand out of the square! Do not hit the ball, just clear the sand out of your imaginary box. I was amazed how much success I had with this technique. It has taken a lot of trips to the practice range to get comfortable with this method, but now I am no longer scared (nervous) when I am in the sand. I still need a lot more practice to control the distance the ball flies out of the sand.

Thanks Tim!
