Inland Empire tourney

» More than 500 tennis players from 47 schools in Washington, Idaho and Montana begin play in the two-day Inland Empire Tournament today.

» Today's play begins at 9 a.m. at several sites. In girls action, No. 1 singles will be played at Mt. Spokane High School, No. 2 singles at Gonzaga Prep, No. 1 doubles at Mead High School and No. 2 doubles at Shadle Park. In boys action, No. 1 singles will be played at University HS, No.1 doubles at Central Valley, No. 2 singles and doubles at East Valley. Mixed No. 1 doubles will be played at Ferris with the No. 2 teams at Hart Field.

» Three rounds will be played today.

» Saturday's action will begin at 8:30 a.m. The semifinals and finals will be played at Mead while the consolation semifinals and finals are at Mt. Spokane.

Baseball

Junior Jarek Cunningham hit a three-run home run in the first and added a two-run shot in the sixth as Mt. Spokane routed host Central Valley 14-3 Thursday on the final day of Greater Spokane League regular-season play.

The Wildcats (18-1), who finished fourth in the GSL last season, ran away with this season's title.

Mark Purser added four hits and five runs batted in for Mt. Spokane, which took the lead after scoring four runs in the first.

Elsewhere in the GSL, defending champion Ferris swept visiting East Valley (5-15) in a doubleheader. Beau Brett went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs as the Saxons won the opener 5-4. Andrew Kittredge (8-1) picked up the win for Ferris after allowing five hits in the complete game. Kittredge went 3 for 4 with the three runs and two RBIs as the Saxons won the second game 13-4. Ferris scored nine runs in the first inning. Brett added a two-run homer for the Saxons in the seventh. … Gonzaga Prep swept visiting Lewis and Clark (4-16) in a doubleheader. Phil Joy's RBI single in the top of the eighth broke a 5-all tie and gave the Bullpups a 6-5 win in the opener. Anthony Via hit a three-run homer in the fourth for G-Prep. In the second game, Max Manix scored on David Kries' fielder's choice in the sixth and the Bullpups edged the Tigers 5-4. … Eric Hendricks went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and Brandon Hughes added three RBIs as Shadle Park topped visiting Mead 9-6. In the second game, Matt Walsh hit a three-run homer in the Panthers' seven-run sixth as Mead won 13-6. Grant Fink added two doubles and two RBIs for the Panthers. Hendricks finished 7 for 7 on the day. … University swept Rogers in a doubleheader. Billy Moon and Aaron LaPlante both drove in three runs as the Titans won the opener 13-3. In the second game, Danny Jordan (4-1) allowed four hits and struck out 11 in the complete game as U-Hi blanked the Pirates 3-0. … Pairings have been determined for next week's District 8 4A playoffs. Mead and U-Hi finished tied for second place behind 3A Mt. Spokane with 13-7 records and are the top two seeds. They earn byes into the second round and double-elimination portion of the tournament, May 11 at Whitworth College. On Wednesday at Avista Stadium, in 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. games, No. 3 Ferris (11-9) plays No. 6 Shadle (8-12) and No. 4 CV (9-10) plays No. 5 G-Prep (9-11) in loser-out contests. Shadle's doubleheader split with Mead put it into the playoffs, and, coupled with U-Hi's sweep of Rogers (7-13), eliminated the Pirates.

Boys soccer

Drew Brittain had a hat trick as Lakeside routed visiting Chewelah 7-0 in a District 7 1A playoff game at Nine Mile Falls. Jeremy Tate added two assists for the Eagles (12-3), who begin regional playoffs on Saturday. The Cougars (2-14) are finished for the season.

Tennis

The Ferris boys and girls wrapped up first-place finishes in the Greater Spokane League. The Ferris boys blanked Central Valley 7-0 while the Saxons girls topped the Bears 6-1.
