Kyle Kady's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Mead a 7-6 win over Gonzaga Prep in a District 8 4A playoff game Friday at Whitworth College.
G-Prep's Phil Joy hit a two-run home run in the first to give the Bullpups an early lead, but the Panthers' Matt Walsh answered with a solo homer in the third to knot the game at 2. Walsh also picked up the win after working a perfect eighth.
•Mark Purser's solo home run in the fifth broke a 1-all tie and gave Mt. Spokane a 2-1 win over visiting West Valley-Yakima in a 3A regional game. Paul Smith earned the win for the Wildcats after allowing three hits and striking out six in the complete game. … In other tournament action, sophomore Jay Fox pitched a complete game two-hitter as Southridge topped visiting North Central 6-1. Nick Buttler was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Southridge. NC (13-9) is finished for the season. Southridge advances to play at Mt. Spokane (19-3) in a loser-out game at 1 p.m. today. That winner will advance to a winner-to-state, loser-out game later today.
•Shane Olson hit a three-run double in the sixth as Lind-Ritzville blanked Liberty 7-0 in the championship game of the District 7 2B playoffs at Avista Stadium. The Broncos, who beat St. George's 6-5 earlier in the day, are the top seed entering regional playoffs, which start next Saturday. Liberty, which beat Republic 14-3 earlier in the day, is the second seed and will play next Saturday at 10 a.m. in Walla Walla. Derek Gianukakis hit a three-run triple in the fifth and Republic topped St. George's 12-5 in Walla Walla. The Tigers advance to play the District 9 top seed while the Dragons will play the District 6 top seed next Saturday in the regional at Walla Walla.
Boys golfFreeman's Max Riggs placed second with a two-round total of 162 and led the Scotties to the team title at the District 7 1A tournament at the par-72 Chewelah Golf & Country Club. Lakeside's Ryan England earned medalist honors after shooting a 155. The top 18 finishers advance to the 1A regionals Tuesday in Chewelah.
Girls golfChewelah's Gracie Schory earned medalist honors after shooting a two-round total of 172 and leading the Cougars to a first-place finish at the District 7 1A tournament at the par-72 Chewelah Golf & Country Club. The top eight individuals advance to the 1A regionals Tuesday in Chewelah.
