REBUILDING FOR SPRING

The list of improvements to Painted Hills got underway the first of March. Bob and Chris of the Painted Hills Golf Course Green Crew have undertaken the big task of rebuilding the tees boxes. They completed #2 last week, and started on #6 ( pictured here) last Friday. It may have sounded like an easy job, but it takes a lot of patience and careful preparetion to complete the job correctly. First, they had to remove the sod. (They had a great machine, which not only removed it, but rolled it up as it went.) The sod then can be reused to resurface the tee box when they are finished building it up and leveling it.

It took 11 loads of dirt to raise the northend of the black tee box on #6 to get it to level. It took several rollings to compact the soil, much raking to keep it level, but the result is amazing.

Bob is now using the tractor to compact the edges, keep them rounded and well sloped. He gently rolls up the sides and back down. It takes many trips to keep the sides even and smooth. Meanwhile, Chris rakes in between to assure that no ridges form.

It is a lot of physical labor, but the result will be worth it. Drives from the black tees, should be longer and straighter as the flight path will be initiated from a level surface.

Despite a steady wind of 30 mph with gusts to 60, Chris and Bob apply a layer of sand, carefully level il, then apply roll after roll of sod.

Rolls of sod are transported and rolled out by hand. Chris utilizes a hand truck to bring the sod up on top of the tee box.

Bob carefully rolls out the sod, making sure that it directly abuts the rolls previously applied.

Bob rolls, fits, cuts, and adjusts so that a smooth surface results during the application of the sod.

Back breaking work, cutting, fitting and reapplying each roll. Fortunately for Bob the ground is soft and spares some wear and tear on his knees.

The north slope of #2 awaits the final patches of sod.

It took three days to remove the hump in the middle and level #2. You can see the amazing results these two hard working men have achieved. a perfectly level box with a perfect view of the green.

#2 Tee Box awaits a layer of sand and final rolling.

Chris and Bob will then move to #9 to complete the rebuilding of the tee boxes. After the final application of sand, and rolling it in, it will take several weeks (weather permitting) for the sod to reroot and take off.

Next on the “to do” list is removal of sod from under some groupings of trees. The area will then be filled in with pine straw. These improvements will give the Painted Hills golfers an opportunity to experience what it is like to hit out of the rough at Augusta. Just in time for the Masters. Could be with the new tee boxes, not drives will end up in the new rough!!

The multitude of improvements are well under way, just in time for the Spring Golf Season at Painted Hills.
